My career in the motor trade began in my early teens working at my local garage on Saturdays and school holidays. At 16, I attended college for 3 years studying motor vehicle engineering. At 19 I started work at the local BMW dealership where I later met Steve some 20+ years ago. I remained there for 7 years, and then moved to a SAAB dealership.
Although happy at SAAB an opportunity at RAC as a patrol came along and this offered me the new challenge and variety that I had missed working in dealerships. My nine years at RAC taught me a lot, not just about cars, but also about customer service and the motor trade in general.
Steve and I remained friends over the years, and set up in business together to form Smart Motor Works in 2012.
Our aim at Smart Motor Works is to provide quality workmanship, combined with the customer care we would expect ourselves.
I entered the motor industry in 1989, serving my apprenticeship with Robinsons Mercedes Benz. I earned a BTEC ONC in motor vehicle engineering at Norwich City College during this time. I remained there until 1994, when the opportunity to work for Lind BMW (latterly Cooper BMW) arose. This seemed like a perfect chance to work with a more dynamic product, so I accepted immediately. It was here that I met and formed a good friendship with Duncan.
At Lind, I proved my technical capabilities by passing the BMW exams to change my status from ‘Service Technician’ through ‘Technician’, ‘Senior Technician’ and finally in 2005, ‘Master Technician’ at which point I achieved ATA accreditation.
In 2009 I received a call from an agency looking for a level 2 technician to work for Tesla Motors in their PDI centre at Wymondham. This job appealed due to the independence and self reliance required, which is in direct contrast to a main dealer environment. In this position I worked as half of a mainly two man team responsible for the final quality of the vehicles received from the Lotus production line in Hethel, before delivery to customers in Europe and the Asia Pacific regions.
Myself and Duncan have now formed Smart Motor Works. We believe in good flexible service, backed up with strong technical knowledge. From our small beginnings, we plan to quickly reinvest in the business which will allow us to expand our coverage.
We are looking forward to meeting you!
